NEWS NOW: What made the top Philadelphia Phillies executive decide against making a big trade for this All-Star pitcher?

The Philadelphia Phillies have yet to make a big-time trade or sign a free agent with one day left at the annual MLB Winter Meetings.

The Phillies are looking to fortify their bullpen with one or two arms, add a possible backside starter, and improve their corner outfield position. After the Toronto Blue Jays non-tendered former All-Star closer Jordan Romano, they signed him to a one-year contract. In 2024, Romano only pitched 13⅔ innings because he had surgery on his right elbow.

A deal with the Chicago White Sox never came to pass, despite earlier talks linking the Phillies to reliever-turned-starter Garrett Crochet throughout the summer. The Boston Red Sox acquired the All-Star ace from the White Sox on Wednesday in exchange for four prospects, including Braden Montgomery and Kyle Teel.

Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski addressed reporters about the team’s decision not to pursue Crochet.
