Berea, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns have hired Texans defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire for the same role in Cleveland, a league source confirmed to News 5.

Cesaire, who played for Houston the previous two seasons, will take over for Ben Bloom. Bloom, who began his career with the Browns in 2009 and returned as a senior defensive assistant before being promoted to run game coordinator in 2021, is expected to take another role on the Browns coaching staff.

Cesaire’s hiring comes only days after the Browns recruited Duce Staley to fill the empty running backs coaching post.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski and the organization will continue their search for a new offensive coordinator to replace Alex Van Pelt, who was fired at the end of the season. The team has identified a few candidates for the role, and the interview process is well started.

Browns OC search: Who do you want the Browns hire? Vote!

Kevin Stefanski, the Cleveland Browns’ head coach, has had the same offensive coaches since his hiring in 2020. Stefanski sacked RB coach Stump Mitchell, TE coach T.C. McCartney, and OC Alex Van Pelt following the playoff defeat of the Houston Texans, a team they had beaten decisively during the regular season.

Tommy Rees was signed first to fill the TE position. Then Duce Staley was brought in to coach the running backs. The role of offensive coordinator comes next on the agenda.

The key question for the incoming OC is whether Stefanski will give up play-calling duties or delegate those responsibilities to his new recruit. Earlier in the week, GM Andrew Berry indicated that he and Stefanski had discussed the future play-calling responsibilities.

Berry stated:

“That will be his decision when he builds a staff. That’s one of Kevin’s talents, but how that plays out year after year is something we’ll have to revisit.”

The Browns have announced that they will interview five candidates for the role of offensive coordinator. So this is not a list of Dawgs By Nature’s preferred offensive coordinators.

In no particular order:

Jerrod Johnson, Houston Texans quarterback coach
Johnson has been suggested by Deshaun Watson’s personal quarterback coach. This past season, he was recognized with developing rookie C.J. Stroud. He has youth on his side, but he is inexperienced, having only been the quarterback coach for one year.

He is a former quarterback who went undrafted in 2011 following a successful career at Texas A&M. Johnson was on the active roster or practice squad of six NFL teams, one CFL, and four other league teams, including the UFL and the Arena League.

His coaching career includes two years of mentorship as offensive quality control coach, an assistant QB coach with the Minnesota Vikings in 2022, and the QB coach role with Houston last year. So his experience is limited at this stage. He worked closely with Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, who turned around the offense. Johnson, 35, has never been the play-caller.

Ken Dorsey – Former Buffalo Bills OC
Dorsey has passion, which contrasts sharply with Stefanski’s placid manner. He can call plays, thus it’s possible that this will become part of his job. During his time with the Bills, their offensive was a roller coaster, with fantastic games followed by mediocre performances. Dorsey was the Browns’ backup quarterback from 2006 to 2008. He is credited with Cam Newton’s rise to prominence as the Carolina Panthers’ quarterback, as well as Josh Allen’s success with Buffalo.
