The Sacramento Kings are heading into a critical offseason, with major questions surrounding the future direction of the franchise. After another frustrating year that ended with a Play-In Tournament loss to the Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento once again fell short of making the NBA playoffs—a disappointing result for a team with postseason aspirations.
With the offseason underway, the organization must now decide whether to hit the reset button and start a rebuild or make targeted adjustments to improve the current roster. Whichever path they choose, it seems increasingly likely that the Kings will part ways with one of their top names—Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, or Zach LaVine.
In light of this uncertainty, Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey proposed a bold trade scenario in a recent mock draft. His suggested deal would see the Kings send DeRozan, Malik Monk, and two future first-round picks to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for All-Star point guard LaMelo Ball.
“After moving on from two All-Star point guards and, oddly enough, trying to recreate the DeRozan-LaVine Bulls pairing, Sacramento emerges as an intriguing destination for LaMelo,” Bailey noted. “Ball’s passing ability and perimeter shooting could relieve much of the offensive burden placed on Sabonis and give him more room to operate inside.”

Bailey makes a compelling case for Ball’s fit within the Kings’ system. The 22-year-old guard would provide Sacramento with a true floor general and dynamic scorer, particularly valuable after the team traded away De’Aaron Fox at the deadline. However, acquiring Ball would also carry some significant risk.
LaMelo has struggled with injuries throughout his young career, missing substantial time each season. Despite those concerns, when healthy, Ball has proven he can be an elite playmaker and offensive catalyst—skills the Kings desperately need.
On the other side of the deal, the Hornets may be hesitant to move on from their franchise cornerstone. Trading Ball for an aging DeRozan, even in a package with Monk and draft picks, may not align with Charlotte’s long-term vision. That said, if the Hornets are interested in accelerating their rebuild, flipping DeRozan and Monk for additional assets down the line could become an attractive option.
Ultimately, the idea of bringing in LaMelo Ball would be a game-changing move for the Kings. But unless a third team enters the conversation to balance the trade, convincing the Hornets to part with their young star might prove to be a tough sell.
