Trey Mancini, a 32-year-old first baseman/outfielder who missed the 2024 season, is making a comeback after the Arizona Diamondbacks and he agreed on a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, sources told ESPN.
Mancini missed 2020 after receiving a stage 3 colon cancer diagnosis. He has participated in parts of seven major league seasons. Before being traded to the Houston Astros the following season and joining the Chicago Cubs in 2023, he rejoined the Baltimore Orioles in 2021.
Mancini did not play the remainder of the season after being cut loose near the end of spring training after signing with the Miami Marlins the previous season.
He will compete for a position with the Diamondbacks, who had the best offense in baseball the previous season and acquired Josh Naylor to play first base, after incumbent Christian Walker signed a three-year, $60 million free agent contract with Houston. He continued working out in Nashville.
Mancini was a potent right-handed presence in the middle of Baltimore’s lineup for five years. He has hit.263/.328/.448 with an OPS+ of 110 and has 400 RBIs and 129 home runs in 831 career games.
Mancini, who was selected in the eighth round out of Notre Dame in 2013, made his debut in 2016 and was playing first and left field full-time by 2017. Calm down.
In 2019, he had his best season, hitting.291/.364/.535 and finishing sixth in the American League with 322 total bases and 75 extra-base hits, including 35 home runs.
There will be fierce competition for Mancini’s spot on the roster. Arizona has a strong outfield in addition to Naylor, with non-roster invites for Garrett Hampson and Cristian, as well as Corbin Carroll, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Jake McCarthy, Pavin Smith, Randal Grichuk, and Alek Thomas.
