The Virginia Tech Hokies continue to see significant roster changes following the conclusion of spring practices, as more players have chosen to explore opportunities elsewhere through the NCAA transfer portal. Over the weekend, redshirt sophomore defensive back became the latest to enter the portal, signaling a shift in the team’s defensive depth.
The defensive back is 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back who played in 12 games as a true freshman in 2023, where he recorded 12 total tackles and showed flashes of promise in the secondary. In the 2024 season, He saw action in just four games, tallying four tackles, and ultimately redshirted the year to preserve a season of eligibility. He leaves Blacksburg with three years of eligibility remaining at his next destination.
The star is the son of former Virginia Tech standout cornerback Loren Johnson, who remains a respected figure in Virginia high school football as the head coach at Highland Springs High School. During his high school career,

Joining Johnson in the transfer portal on Monday was redshirt sophomore linebacker/defensive back Cameren Fleming, another young defender looking for a fresh start. Fleming, who stands at 6-foot-0 and weighs 202 pounds, hails from North Chesterfield, Virginia, and played at Trinity Episcopal High School. After redshirting his true freshman season in 2023, he appeared in four games during the 2024 campaign and recorded two tackles. Like Johnson, Fleming also has three years of eligibility remaining.
Their departures add to a growing list of Hokies players who’ve entered the spring transfer portal, a trend that reflects both the changing landscape of college football and the coaching staff’s effort to reshape the roster to better fit their evolving vision. So far, the list of spring departures includes:
- QB Davi Belfort
- OT Web Davidson
- C Caleb Nitta
- LB Jayden McDonald
- EDGE Jorden McDonald
- DB Braylon Johnson
- LB/DB Cameren Fleming
Notably, Virginia Tech has yet to add any new players via the transfer portal this spring, but the coaching staff is expected to actively evaluate and pursue key reinforcements at positions of need in the coming weeks.
As the Hokies look to build a stronger, more competitive roster for the 2025 season and beyond, these departures mark both the end of chapters and the opening of new opportunities—for the program and the players involved. We extend our best wishes to Braylon Johnson and Cameren Fleming as they embark on the next steps of their football journeys.
