According to OU Insider, Oklahoma is anticipated to appoint Nate Dreiling, the defensive coordinator at Arkansas State, as the linebackers coach. Prior to his hiring at Arkansas State earlier this year, Dreiling served as Utah State’s interim head coach during the 2024 campaign.
Dreiling also has defensive play calling experience from his time at New Mexico State where he was the defensive coordinator for two years. It is expected that Brent Venables will call the defense during the 2025 season, and Dreiling will coach the inside linebackers.
Under Dreiling’s leadership, Utah State’s defense ranked in the top 50 for sacks and interceptions in 2024.
The Sooners’ search for their third defensive coordinator since Brent Venables took over as head coach came after co-defensive coordinator Zac Alley departed after just one season in Norman to accept a defensive coordinator position at West Virginia.
