One position still wide open for the Virginia Tech Hokies heading into the 2025 season is wide receiver — and it’s a group in need of fresh talent and experience. The team lost its top four pass-catchers from last year: Ali Jennings, Da’Quan Felton, Jaylin Lane, and Stephen Gosnell — a tough hit for any offense to recover from.
Returning wideout Ayden Greene is expected to step up, and spring practices have seen Tennessee transfer Cameron Seldon make an impression. But things got even more interesting this week with a surprise twist: Marshall wide receiver Christian Fitzpatrick was granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA — and Virginia Tech is already making moves.
Fitzpatrick visited Blacksburg on Friday, and Hokie fans might remember him well. In Week 2 of last season, when Marshall came to Lane Stadium, Fitzpatrick put on a show with four receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown. One of those catches — an acrobatic, one-handed grab along the sideline — had everyone talking.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound receiver finished last season with 34 catches for 576 yards and six touchdowns, averaging an impressive 16.9 yards per catch. Simply put: he’s a big-bodied, playmaking threat — and Virginia Tech’s quarterbacks in 2025 would love to have a target like him.
His visit to Virginia Tech wasn’t the only one on his schedule. Fitzpatrick also visited Oklahoma State earlier this week and has drawn interest from several Power Five programs including Louisville, Colorado, Baylor, and Arkansas. That list is expected to grow the longer he stays on the market.

If he chooses to become a Hokie, expect him to climb the depth chart quickly under new offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery. Wide receivers coach Fontel Mines would no doubt be eager to work closely with a talent like Fitzpatrick — a guy who could provide a much-needed boost to Tech’s aerial attack.
