2025 Virginia Tech Football Offseason Outlook – Defensive Ends

Antwaun Powell-Ryland Jr. was a key player for Virginia Tech’s defensive front last season, finishing third in the nation with 16 sacks and recording 43 total tackles. However, with Powell-Ryland Jr. heading to the NFL draft, his departure leaves a significant void in the defensive line. To fill this gap, the Hokies have added James Djonkam and Ben Bell

Djonkam, a former All-MAC second-team player at Eastern Michigan, brings versatility with experience as both an edge rusher and linebacker. His diverse skill set is expected to fit well with defensive coordinator Sam Siefkes, who may use Djonkam in various roles. Djonkam, who also received interest from Michigan State and West Virginia, is now focused on making an impact at Virginia Tech.

Bell, on the other hand, finds himself in a unique situation. After being a candidate for several preseason awards, including the Bednarik, Lombardi, and Reese’s Senior Bowl watch lists, Bell played just four games for the Ohio Bobcats. Following his entry into the transfer portal, Bell attracted attention from multiple Power Five schools, including Ole Miss, but ultimately chose the Hokies to help strengthen their defensive line.

The Hokies also saw edge rushers C.J. McCray and Ishmael Findlayter depart through the portal. McCray moved to Cincinnati in the Big 12, while Findlayter transferred to Duquesne. Both players had limited roles last season, combining for just four tackles.

Virginia Tech had an underwhelming season in 2024, finishing with a 6-7 record, falling short of higher expectations. With changes to both the coaching staff and roster, head coach Brent Pry will need significant improvements this season to avoid being on the hot seat.
