Daryl Morey appears to have wanted something bigger than the Big Three.

This summer, the Philadelphia 76ers’ palms were definitely itchy.

Following another poor season marred by injuries and an early playoff elimination, the 76ers made a significant change this offseason. Armed with a truckload of cap space, the front office smelled blood and landed the biggest fish in the open market: nine-time All-Star Paul George.
The front staff continued to smooth out the roster with seasoned signings designed to address pressing club needs. The 76ers are currently regarded as legitimate title contenders, but Daryl Morey appears to have had even bigger plans for the organization this offseason.

The 76ers were reported to be targeting another star after signing. Paul In a recent interview with the Rights To Ricky Sanchez podcast, George Morey hinted at a potential trade after signing a four-year, max contract.

“So there was a transaction, shortly after Paul arrived, in which we would have had to give up quite a few of those picks. Our payroll for next year would have been $315 million. That would be perfect; we’re exactly there.”

The experienced executive did not provide a name, but aside from Utah’s Lauri Markkanen, there aren’t many elite players available for selection who would require multiple lottery picks. Unfortunately, the 76ers were one of the first clubs reported to be interested in the All-Star forward to some extent.

Having said that, a quintet of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, George, and Markkanen would undoubtedly be the most talented in the NBA. The team would be extremely top-heavy, but their level of talent would be more than enough to win the championship.

Still, the Philadelphia 76ers are unlikely to be concerned about losing Markkanen, assuming he is actually the point of allusion here. Because of this season’s better balanced squad, the team has more than enough to fight for the championship.
