After making it through the first week of training camp, a seasoned Dallas Cowboys cornerback announced his retirement from the game at the age of 28. The release of the former first-round pick means the Cowboys will have further depth problems in the secondary this season.

The Cowboys put top cornerback Trevon Diggs on the PUP list at the beginning of training camp while he heals from an injury he suffered last season, according to a statement released by the team earlier this week.
As he continues to recuperate from the torn ACL he sustained during practice in September of last year, cornerback Trevon Diggs of the Dallas Cowboys was formally placed on the active/physically unable to perform list on Thursday.
Due to his presence on the list, Diggs is free to make a return at any time during training camp or the preseason, but if he were to start the regular season on the list, he would have to miss a minimum of four games.
Stephon Gilmore was not re-signed by the Cowboys.
Stephon Gilmore, a seasoned player, filled in for Diggs during much of the previous campaign, and he excelled in the Cowboys’ secondary. Gilmore stated that the front office has decided not to allow him to re-sign with the Cowboys for the 2024 campaign. With the signing of former first-round pick Gareon Conley this offseason, the Cowboys seemed to have moved past Gilmore.
According to Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team, Conley was cut by the Cowboys on Sunday. The Cowboys needed Conley, so the decision seemed like a surprising cut.

Todd Archer of ESPN clarified the cut further. Conley told the Cowboys he planned to retire from the NFL, according to Archer.
The 28-year-old was selected by the Oakland Raiders with the 24th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. In the 2019–2020 season, he was a member of the Houston Texans. 2020 saw him sustain an injury during training camp, forcing him to miss the entire season on injured reserve. He wouldn’t return to the NFL until 2024, when he signed with the Cowboys. He participated in the 2024 UFL season.
Conley has made appearances in 31 NFL games, 26 of which he started. In all, he has logged 94 tackles and four interceptions.
