The TV show announced that Gladiators referee John Anderson, 92, had passed away.
The most well-known roles played by the Scottish sports coach were those of umpire in the original ITV show (1992–2000) and the redesigned, brief Sky series.
In addition, he coached over 100 Olympians. In 2002, he was admitted into the Coaching Hall of Fame.
The Gladiators’ official Instagram account posted the following statement: “We are very sorry to learn that our favorite referee, John Anderson, passed away at the age of 92.
“We send our condolences to his family and friends. John will always be known for being the voice behind “Gladiators Ready! Contenders Ready!”
He would countdown after the introduction, stating, “Three, two, one.”
“One of the most iconic voices and will always be remembered,” declared Mark Clattenburg, the referee on the current BBC show, which debuted earlier this year.
“Following him in the new Gladiators season was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, and I will always remember seeing him make sure the Gladiators follow the rules! Legend, rest in peace!”
In addition, Anderson served as the Scottish national coach and head coach of the Amateur Athletics Association of England.
He collaborated with Scottish Olympic runner Liz McColgan, hurdler William Sharman, and race walker Lisa Kehler, who was born in Staffordshire.
Gladiator and Olympic sprinter Jennifer Stoute, aka Rebel, wrote: “He was the best.” He had the ability to make us both laugh and yell. finest recollections.”
