The Golden State Warriors’ 2023-24 season did not proceed as expected.
The team’s issues grew more apparent with each passing game, as a squad designed to back two-time NBA MVP and four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry was unable to help the 35-year-old advance past the Play-In Tournament.
The free agency period in the summer of 2024 provided the Warriors with the opportunity to sign numerous role players who may be crucial parts to the squad in 2024-25, but it also saw the departure of one of the franchise’s top players, Klay Thompson, to the Dallas Mavericks.
Despite missing one of the most renowned players in the team’s history entering this season, the personnel that has been added has resulted in overall uncertainty as the season approaches.
This sense of uncertainty extends to several of the Warriors’ recent draft picks, who have both showed flashes and given the franchise cause to consider dealing them for an All-Star player.
Even while the organization may not want to abandon the project pieces it has been working on for up to three seasons, the front office may feel pressure to bring another accomplished player to Golden State.
While the Warriors’ “two-timeline” method was effective enough to win the NBA title in 2022, it has failed to advance the franchise beyond the second round since then. With Curry and Draymond Green nearing the conclusion of their peak years, the organization has been put in a difficult position.
Mike Dunleavy, general manager, has some judgments to make about the eventual conclusion of the “two-timeline” experiment.
The franchise could decide whether to keep its young players and build for the future, or Dunleavy could attempt to trade his young assets to provide Curry and Green with a new acquisition who could serve as the last piece to another three-headed monster in Golden State.
