The San Francisco 49ers begin 2024 training camp hungry for vengeance, hoping to ascend the peak once more next season. However, while the core of their roster is a ready-made Super Bowl contender, some weaknesses could be exploited on the big stage.

That is not the case at quarterback, where third-year breakout star Brock Purdy has completed his first full summer as an NFL player.

Last season, the Iowa State grad set records for the Red & Gold, becoming the 49ers’ single-season passing leader. SF’s 2023 offense skyrocketed, averaging nearly 30 points per game for much of the season.

Of course, Brock Purdy did not stop there; he also produced exceptional weaponry across the board. However, the young gunslinger’s breakthrough has turned the tables in San Francisco, potentially giving them their first true franchise quarterback since Jeff Garcia.

But what happens if Purdy suffers an injury?

Given the 49ers’ recent track record, it’s probably a good idea to make a small investment in the depth chart. And they have, bringing in knowledgeable veterans who can fill gaps if necessary.

Here’s how the 2024 49ers quarterback chart looks going into next week.

Josh Dobbs’ extradition voyage stops in San Francisco, where he signs a one-year agreement to back up Purdy. We think.

Despite a tumultuous 2023 season, the Tennessee alum will have to contend for the No. 2 spot in 2024. Brandon Allen, San Francisco’s third option a year ago, gets a head start on Shanahan’s playbook. And thus far this summer, the former has proven to be the better of the two gunslingers. Dobbs has looked more like the player he became with the Vikings than the one he was in Arizona.

However, Dobbs was signed for a specific reason.

In 2023, the Passtronaut started more games than both Allen and current Minnesota starting Sam Darnold combined (12). He concluded the season with 2,464 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and ten interceptions. Dobbs also scored six touchdowns on the ground.

Brandon Allen, the third selection from a year ago, is already considering backup options.

Allen didn’t play any important football minutes in 2023, although he did spend a year with Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers. A jumpstart on the playbook has appeared during offseason workouts, and he appears to be a worthy challenger for the backup spot next season.

He’ll have to demonstrate it early and often during training camp, though.

Prior to SF, the University of Arkansas alum appeared in 15 games for the Denver Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals over four seasons. He has 1,611 throwing yards and 10 touchdowns in his career. Allen also has six interceptions to his name.

Tanner Mordecai is an undrafted NFL rookie quarterback. Tanner Mordecai will most likely serve as a training camp body for the Red and Gold.

Or he swiftly outperforms expectations and climbs the depth chart, becoming the next Brock Purdy (probably joking).

Aside from that, the Texas native was a tremendous thrower in college, accumulating nearly 10,000 yards in six years. He also had 85 touchdowns and 27 interceptions.

Still, all signs go to the rookie joining the practice squad after August. Unless he wants to try the waters of the United Football League, where he was picked by the D.C. Defenders this month.
