Mason Greenwood has officially left Manchester United to sign a permanent agreement with French club Olympique de Marseille.
Derick Kinoti reported on Mason Greenwood’s permanent transfer to Olympique de Marseille on July 18, 2024.
Mason Greenwood has officially left Manchester United to sign a permanent agreement with French club Olympique de Marseille.
United announced on their official website, “Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United and joined French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent transfer.”
“The 22-year-old English forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain, made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since making his debut in 2019.”
“We wish Mason all the best in his future career.”
Marseille has also confirmed Greenwood’s arrival on their official social media accounts, posting a video of the forward in his new colours.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein recently reported that Marseille had reached a deal with Greenwood on personal terms regarding his move to the Stade Vélodrome.
It was reported that United will earn €31.6 million (£26.7 million) by permanently parting ways with Greenwood.
This deal includes a fixed cost of €27.6 million (£23.3 million) plus €4 million (£3.4 million) in add-ons. United also negotiated a significant sell-on clause in the agreement.
Following his heroics in Spain with Getafe last season, in which he earned the club’s Player of the Season title, Greenwood informed a number of his clubs of his availability.
The Englishman was connected with Juventus, Lazio, Valencia, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and Borussia Dortmund.
However, in recent days, Marseille has stepped up their pursuit of the 22-year-old, eventually beating out all other interested teams for his contract.
Greenwood last played for United in January 2022. He was detained for attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault resulting in actual bodily harm. The Crown Prosecution Service eventually withdrew all charges against him, citing the withdrawal of material witnesses from the case.
United had intended to reintegrate Greenwood into Erik ten Hag’s squad, but after facing intense opposition and public indignation, they abandoned their plans. The Red Devils then sanctioned his loan move to Getafe, where he resumed his career.
