Because of course, the Cavs would select a head coach who makes you wonder, “Who?”
According to an ESPN story on Monday, Golden State Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson will be appointed as the Cleveland Cavaliers’ next head coach.
According to the four-letter network, Atkinson and the Cavaliers have already started working on a contract, with a definitive deal likely soon. (RELATED: Talen Horton-Tucker’s Los Angeles Home Allegedly Broken Into And Robbed Of $170,000 In Jewelry: REPORT)
According to the publication, Cleveland’s final two options before choosing on Atkinson were the Warriors assistant and New Orleans Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego. Borrego, who worked with current Detroit Pistons president Trajan Langdon while with the Pelicans, is now likely to be a “prominent candidate” in Detroit’s search for a new head coach, according to ESPN.
Atkinson, Golden State’s top assistant, is now entrusted with leading a squad that has 99 regular-season wins and reached the Eastern Conference semifinals in the previous two seasons.
Kenny Atkinson has taken one hell of a gamble.
Yes, he will have talent like Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert. He will be able to develop Evan Mobley, but what will happen to Donovan Mitchell?
He just has one year left on his deal before he can opt out, so if Cleveland does not reach an agreement on an extension, the entire situation might backfire on Atkinson.
But hey, as the old saying goes, “No risk, no reward.”
