Mannion signed, Berry & Edwards to follow
The Addicks made their first summer signing today. It comes as no surprise that goalkeeper Will Mannion will join after his contract with Cambridge United expires at the end of this month.
Mannion concluded the season as Cambridge’s number one, although his career, like many goalies, has been stop-and-start.
Signed on potential, one would presume; he is a good age (26) and fits Nathan Jones’ description of being big and commanding in his box.
He played well when we played at their house, but he doesn’t get enough game time. His appearance record includes only 29 EFL outings, as well as some non-league and Cypriot football.
The thing that stood out the most in the Jones’ statements today was that if AMB or Isted stay, they will likely be third choice next season. One would imagine Jones had already made them both aware of this, as it would have been a difficult read for both lads this morning.
Mannion, I believe, would be a second choice behind a more experienced goalkeeper who has yet to be named.
Also, I expect to constantly refer to him as Wilf, so keep an eye out for that.
In other transfer news, Rich Cawley has returned from his break and revealed on X that Charlton have agreed to sign Luton midfielder Luke Berry and Dunfermline left-sided defender Josh Edwards. The latter will require a charge. Medicals will be conducted whenever they return from their respective vacations.p
