How to Catch Mamelodi Sundowns
Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro dreams of winning the DStv Premiership. The irrepressible Mamelodi Sundowns stand in the way. The Spaniard believes the Sea Robbers must emulate Kabo Yellow’s consistency and maturity.
The Buccaneers were one of South Africa’s finest teams last season. Orlando Pirates won both the MTN8 and the Nedbank Cup, but finished second in the DStv Premiership, 23 points behind Sundowns. Riviero has outlined the levels his squad must reach in order to win the championship next season while still competing in the CAF Champions League.
“I think to be the best team after 30 games, you need to have that consistency, understanding that the team dominating the league is setting high standards in terms of points season after season,” the coach of the Orlando Pirates told FARPost.
“I believe we need to mature as players and personnel. That maturity to accept a challenge every three days, rather than simply occasionally. That is the difference between a squad that can truly compete for the league championship and one that cannot.
Furthermore, the Spaniard believes the club has the necessary assets but needs to improve its mentality and teamwork.
“Everything else is there.” Talent, opportunity, and resources. Everything is in place. It is up to us as a community to build that culture. That mentality of accepting a challenge every two or three days, no matter where or who. Regardless of the conditions, we will get the outcomes. We are currently making
IMPORTANT START TO THE SEASON.
Furthermore, Riveiro stated that last season’s crown was lost in the early stages.
“The distance became too long in the first three to four months of the tournament. I don’t want to imply that we gave up because it was too much. We knew early in the season that it would be difficult, and we’ve seen that the club that is dominating is not dropping many points,” Riveiro said.
Meanwhile, the club discharged six players: Richard Ofori, Siyabonga Mpontshane, two midfielders (Thabang Monare and Fortune Makaringe), and two attackers (Kermit Erasmus and Souaibou Marou). The Soweto giants have also lost assistant coach Sergio Almenara, who has returned to Finland to be with his young family.
