When 2024–25 officially begins in a few months, the Golden State Warriors might have a very significant offseason this summer and appear completely different.

Well, they’ve already made one major adjustment.

Anthony Slater reports that Jon Phelps has joined the Warriors as team counsel and cap strategist.

Phelps had been the Senior Director of Basketball Strategy for the Detroit Pistons since 2014 before joining the Warriors.

What kind of effect might this hire have on the Warriors, and why is it such a big deal?

Over the past few seasons, the team has paid a large amount in luxury tax payments, and they would like to reverse that.

Klay Thompson, who is soon to become an unrestricted free agent, may depart this summer.

The team may undergo significant alteration as a result of this, including the possible loss of Thompson and other adjustments.

Phelps would be involved in choosing the roster.

He will not only provide new insight to the team but also a wealth of experience in dealing with salary caps and negotiating deals.

Even if the changes are difficult, his ideas might pave the way for what the team needs to change.

The Warriors are determined not to let that happen again the next season after they were unable to make the playoffs this year.

Phelps and the front office must therefore make the appropriate adjustments in any modifications they make.

The Pistons were never had to pay the luxury tax while he was on the team.

That suggests that Phelps is skilled and has the potential to be very beneficial to the Warriors.
