Eventually this offseason, Jared Goff will receive a new contract from the Lions, barring…
Even if it is lower on the Detroit Lions’ priority list for contract extensions, Jared Goff’s next deal is inevitable. Even though Memorial Day is still more than two weeks away in May, there shouldn’t be any major cause for alarm until training camp opens in late July. Even so, Week 1 would remain a more difficult timetable to complete the transaction.

General manager Brad Holmes spoke extensively on Thursday morning, but he didn’t really address the status of the contract negotiations with Goff. As anticipated, which is alright. In terms of the state of negotiations, neither direction matters. However, time is slowly running out, so that shouldn’t be entirely disregarded.

The general attitude surrounding the Lions and Goff’s agency reaching a long-term agreement has been “when, not if.” Holmes recognized the extra complexity of a quarterback contract, along with all of its associated costs and long-term effects on the team’s ability to assemble a roster.

Few people doubt that Goff will remain the quarterback for the Lions for a few more seasons after 2024. Could that, however, alter?

A different notion about the Lions’ plans with Jared Goff is offered by a Detroit radio broadcaster.
On the 97.1 The Ticket show “The Daily Ticket” on Wednesday, Jeff Riger discussed the circumstances surrounding Goff.

Following the announcement of the new contracts for St. Brown and Sewell, Riger cited ESPN’s Adam Schefter’s quick report stating that a deal for Goff was not “imminent” and that “no deal was close” at the time. As Riger noted, nothing had been heard since, until Holmes’ Thursday radio appearance. Once more, Holmes merely struck all the right chords without contributing anything profound.

Riger claimed that at a show he was conducting about a week ago, he was asked a question about Goff and the Lions.

Riger rightly praised Holmes for what he’s done to build the Lions roster, pointing to Goff having a unique situation that would not exist anywhere else right now. Any other team with a roster as good as the Lions has their quarterback.

Riger pointed to how Goff may not get the credit he deserves, so maybe the Lions need him more. Then Riger stretched to a different idea to ultimately land back on Goff needing the Lions more.

In his capacity as general manager of the Lions, Riger recognized Holmes’ contribution to the Rams’ selection of Goff and their trade for him. The “elephant in the room,” though, is Hendon Hooker, a third-round selection from the previous season who will have an opportunity to establish himself this offseason.

“Is there a chance that Brad Holmes has no desire, at all, to give Jared Goff big money?” , asked Riger.

Riger stated that the Lions may franchise tag Goff in 2025, despite how implausible that scenario is. They could potentially control the contract for that two years, at which point Goff would turn 31.
