This summer, Klay Thompson will become an unrestricted free agent. Reports indicate that the seasoned shooter would be willing to play for a team other than the Golden State Warriors.
On FanDuel TV’s “Run it Back” on Monday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that there is “mutual interest” between Thompson and the Orlando Magic. Thompson and other free agents, according to Charania, believe the Magic are competitive if they can assemble the right players.
With a 47-35 record, the Magic placed sixth in the Eastern Conference this season. They were defeated in seven games by the Cleveland Cavaliers in their first-round playoff series.
They appeared in the postseason for the first time in the previous four years, indicating that they are on the right track.
Though there should be a lot of interest in Thompson throughout the league, many anticipate his return to Golden State. If the Warriors decide it’s time to part ways with their championship core of Thompson, Stephen Curry, and Draymond Green, a rival team may even be poised to take advantage.
This season, Thompson scored 17.9 points per game on average despite having shooting issues. 43.2% of his field goals were made, with 38.7% of them coming from threes.
In the team’s play-in loss against the Kings last month, he was scoreless. The 34-year-old may not have intended to end his Warriors career in that manner.
