Max Tooley, a UDFA, might be able to give the Houston Texans depth at linebacker.

Houston — Although linebacker Max Tooley did not hear his name called in the 2024 NFL Draft, he still has a chance to make an impression in his first season. On Saturday, Tooley signed a contract as an undrafted free agent with the Houston Texans.

Azeez Al-Shaair and Christian Harris form a valuable linebacker tandem for the Texans. However, the Texans’ linebacker group is lacking outside of the two. Henry To’oTo’o may be Houston’s third most important player in the position group, but he needs to work on a few areas from his rookie campaign in order to be ready for his second season.

Coty M. Davis and John Hickman debate whether or not Tooley will be the most significant undrafted free agent in the upcoming season in the most recent Locked on Texans podcast episode.

With Blake Cashman joining the Minnesota Vikings as a free agency in March, the Texans will require depth at linebacker.

Tooley played six seasons for BYU after starting his collegiate career in 2018. Tooley has 311 tackles, 176 single hits, eight pass deflections, seven interceptions, and 3.0 sacks during his time with the Cougars.

The Texans added two undrafted linebackers following the 2024 NFL Draft, including the former BYU prospect. Tarique Barnes, a five-year prospect with superiority at all three defensive levels, was also signed by them. Barnes attended Illinois for five seasons. In addition to 190 tackles, he also had two interceptions, 5.5 sacks, and seven pass deflections.

Additionally, Davis and Hickman discuss how wide outs Jadon and Jaxon Janke might sharpen the Texans’ competitiveness throughout training camp. South Dakota State was where the twin brothers made their name for themselves. During his career, Jadon caught 170 passes for 2,800 yards. Jaxon caught 244 passes for 3,677 yards.
