Moving up or down in the NFL draft, trade draft picks is nothing new for Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry.
Throughout his four years with the Browns, Berry has made many uses of the draft capital, including trading veteran players for those picks.
When estimating the possibility of Cleveland trying to advance into this year’s first round of the draft, the general manager was being truthful.
In a direct response to a question on whether the team will actively pursue a first-round NFL draft pick for 2024, Berry provided a candid response on the “Cleveland Browns Daily” Podcast, which was tweeted by the team.
Berry stated, “That would be pretty unlikely at this point,” and he would even “be surprised” if the team traded into the first round in this year’s draft.
Berry said that while the team was considering its possibilities, the front office of the Browns would not be informed of their decision on the team’s second-round pick until Friday night, when the draft board of available players was announced.
The Browns should have a number of possibilities to choose from, according to Berry.
Berry stated that he would take advantage of the chance to return in the draft if it presented itself.
The general manager of the Browns stated that he approaches the selection with a focus on long-term roster objectives rather than instant starters, particularly taking into account players the team may develop into starters down the road.
