The Tasmania JackJumpers promised Apple Islanders a “hell of a celebration” as they crossed Bass Strait on their way home after first defending the island.
The JackJumpers won the best-of-five series decider on Sunday, defeating Melbourne United 83-81 on the road to secure their first-ever NBL championship.
In front of 11,175 fans in enemy territory at Melbourne’s John Cain Arena, Jordon Crawford produced one of the great scoring performances to help Tasmania claw their way to the crown in a gripping battle.
Crawford scored 27 first-half points and overcame a quiet third period to finish with a series-high 32.
As the JackJumpers’ title celebration gained momentum, the coach urged his team and the club’s supporters to “pump our brakes,” enjoy the moment, and really enjoy their victory on Sunday. He also promised to wind down with a few beers and one of his favorite cigars.
“I’ll sit back and watch these guys celebrate and enjoy themselves, and rightfully so,” Roth said.
“Then we’re going to have a hell of celebration in the next few days back in Tasmania.”
“We have a vision of keeping this group together but let’s just enjoy the moment and see where it leads us, and not get too far ahead of ourselves,” Roth said.
