Coach Kris Knoblauch stated that he will chat with Connor McDavid on Wednesday before the team decides whether to play the three-time NHL MVP that evening against the Golden Knights. McDavid did not practice on Tuesday.
“What matters most is that we are prepared for the playoffs,” Knoblauch stated, adding that McDavid needed some rest for maintenance following some pain he had sustained late in Saturday’s 4-2 victory over Calgary. “I believe we have substance. Although you can never fully replace Connor, our bodies are in good condition. Our goal is to have every player as healthy as possible for the postseason.
McDavid leads the league with 99 assists and ranks third in points with 130, trailing only Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov and Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon. The Oilers recalled forward Dylan Holloway from the minors on an emergency basis.
Edmonton enters Wednesday’s game second in the Pacific Division with 99 points, five back of first-place Vancouver with two fewer games played. The Oilers host the Canucks on Saturday.
