Under the 44-year-old’s leadership, the Blues had experienced their finest start to a season in years, and a 3-1 victory against bitter rivals West Bromwich Albion had put them in the play-off spots. But that triumph also happened to coincide with Wayne Rooney’s decision to resign from his position at D.C. United, which prompted the board to move quickly to bring the former England striker to St Andrew’s.
It was an unpopular decision amongst the fanbase, and their concerns turned out to be justified as the club soon found themselves tumbling down the table. Rooney’s reign proved disastrous, winning just two of his 15 games in charge before he too was shown the door with the team languishing in 20th.
Tony Mowbray was then drafted in, with form picking up before he was forced to take a leave of absence due to ill health. Since then, Mark Venus and Gary Rowett have both led the team, but the West Midlands side are now in very real danger of dropping into League One.
With five games remaining, Birmingham can still be in the Championship. They have only won one of their last nine games, placing them in the final relegation spot.
Now that Eustace’s leaving appears to have been a real-life sliding doors moment, Wagner acknowledges that it was definitely the incorrect decision:
According to the Daily Mail, he stated, “We made one decision that if we were to go back in time we wouldn’t have made.” We can never be certain that every choice we make will be the best one, in my opinion.
“With some of the choices we’ve made this year, we’ve learned some valuable lessons. We’ve also learned a lot about how we approach making significant decisions in sports.
