The Spireites just needed a point to lose in West Yorkshire, despite having a boisterous 2,300 supporters away. But on Saturday, when they play home to Boreham Wood, they will have another chance to win the trophy.

Just after the break, Will Grigg gave Town the lead. However, three goals in the final fifteen minutes of play, two from Rob Harker and one from Andrew Oluwabori, gave Halifax the upper hand. It was a terrible pitch at The Shay on Wednesday night, and the visitors faced an uphill battle.

And any prospect of a promotion party was well and truly over when Aaron Cosgrave made it 4-1 on 66 minutes despite substitute James Berry pulling a goal back with 10 minutes remaining. Town applied some pressure late on, but couldn’t find a third to make it an exciting ending.

Halifax were clinical and played the difficult pitch better and deserved the win. Although it won’t matter this season, the four goals conceded here and at Bromley and Dorking Wanderers, as well as the two at Oldham Athletic, will probably give manager Paul Cook food for thought next year.
