Until now, the Dak Prescott contract problem has been one of the more bizarre aspects of this NFL offseason that has mostly gone unnoticed. The Dallas Cowboys are, as everyone knows, the jewel in the crown of daytime studio debate, so throughout the first few weeks of free agency, the public has heard a lot about their offseason decisions—or rather, lack thereof.
Although there has been a lot of whining and criticism about the Cowboys’ inability to replace leaving players like Tony Pollard with big-budget purchases, there hasn’t been much discussion about the reality that Prescott is set to enter his last year of contract.
Which is unfortunate because Dallas’ decisions regarding Prescott during the summer will have a direct impact on Jerry Jones’s mindset and the direction that America’s Team will take going forward. Prescott is an experienced quarterback, and as such, he hardly ever plays out the last year of his deal.
Despite being closely watched the past few seasons as Dallas has been a perennial contender, Prescott is still, at most, one of the NFL’s top-15 quarterbacks. He toy with being in the top five at best. The most precious asset in all of sports is a player with that kind of skill at that position.
The Cowboys, though, appear content to take a big chance and let Prescott finish the final year of his contract with a wandering eye. It’s possible that they concur with Dan Orlovsky, who stated on First Take today that the team should completely blow it up by firing Prescott because Jerry Jones will always want to win the Super Bowl but never actually gives his team “Super Bowl support.”
