In the upcoming months, Derby County will need to make a significant choice about goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith’s future.
Joe Wildsmith, one of the first players signed during the David Clowes era, has been a constant factor in Derby County’s recovery. The goalkeeper’s contract at his boyhood team, Sheffield Wednesday, expired in the summer of 2022, and he signed a free transfer to the Rams.
It must have been difficult to make the decision to leave Hillsborough, but thus far it seems to have paid off. Prior to going through some difficult moments this season, Wildsmith was the clear option for the gloves for the 2022–2023 campaign.
With Josh Vickers’ arrival, there is now more competition for goalkeeping spots. For the majority of the season thus far, Wildsmith has remained the top option, notwithstanding a brief period when adjustments were made.
In the upcoming months, Derby will need to make a significant choice on Wildsmith’s future because of his expiring contract. His contract expires in the summer, so if he chooses not to extend it, he may be able to sign for a different team at no cost.
Though there may be some ambiguity regarding the division the Rams will play in next season, it is unclear if an offer will be made. A problem with promises for playing time can also arise because the 28-year-old will have some competition.
