The New England Patriots have a long way to go in their free agency. In the absence of any player signings from Thursday through Saturday, the team returned to the market on Sunday, signing former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver K.J. Osborn for a one-year deal.

Osborn was a fifth-round draft selection in the past and has a strong producing history. But what will he bring with him to New England? To find out, let’s examine the signature from a broad viewpoint.

A wider receiving depth…
The Patriots now have nine wide receivers under contract for the 2024 campaign with Osborn’s arrival. The expected depth chart has sophomore DeMario Douglas and recently re-signed Kendrick Bourne at the top, followed by Osborn, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Tyquan Thornton, Jalen Reagor, Kayshon Boutte, T.J. Luther, and Kawaan Baker.

Likewise, DeVante Parker, at least in name. Although his previously announced release has not yet been completed, keeping him on the active roster for the time being, it is anticipated that the transaction will be completed shortly.

Throughout his time in Minnesota, Osborn has demonstrated his ability to line up wherever in the formation, playing the positions of slot receiver, X, and Z. He might contribute to improving the depth on the perimeter in New England: with DeVante Parker no longer available, Osborn, Jalen Reagor, Tyquan Thornton, and, to a lesser extent, T.J. Luther, seem to be the strongest candidates to fill the X spot right now.

But Osborn should ideally be more of a Z player along the lines of Kendrick Bourne. After re-signing, Bourne is recuperating from an ACL tear sustained in October of last year, so having experienced depth and track record behind him could be crucial.
