Jimmy Garoppolo, the former quarterback for the New England Patriots, found a new place to live on Friday following a turbulent parting from the Las Vegas Raiders.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Garoppolo will sign a contract with the Los Angeles Rams “per source” on Friday. Garoppolo was a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers who won a Super Bowl. This week, the Raiders cut him because, according to Schefter, the NFL penalized him for two games last season for using performance-enhancing substances.
Garoppolo, an Eastern Illinois native and former second-round choice in the NFL Draft, was Tom Brady’s backup with the Patriots from 2014 to 2017. He was traded by the Patriots in 2017 to the 49ers, where he started all games until 2021.
Prior to the 49ers’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, Garoppolo assisted the squad in getting there. Notwithstanding Garoppolo’s success in leading the 49ers to an NFC West championship and two trips to the NFC Championship Game, the team selected quarterback Trey Lance with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Garoppolo seemed to be going somewhere in 2022 after maintaining his starting position in 2021, but the 49ers decided to keep him. After Lance’s early-season ankle injury, he had another chance. However, Garoppolo’s season ended suddenly in December 2022 due to a foot injury, which led to the emergence of quarterback Brock Purdy.
