With the second overall pick in the NFL Draft, the Washington Commanders might potentially alter the course of the team. Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels possess the skill to be exceptional NFL quarterbacks, but Caleb Williams—who is predicted to be selected first overall—is thought to be a potential generational talent. The Commanders are supposed to use that pick for one of those until something changes. The Las Vegas Raiders are a team to keep an eye on if they deal it.
Christian Wilkins was signed by Las Vegas in free agency, showing their supporters that they have no intention of giving up on the competition. Arguably the best free agent available, Wilkins signed a $110 million contract with them. According to Tashan Reed of The Athletic, Gardner Minshew, who was also signed by the Raiders, stated that he was not promised a starting position at the time of his signing. According to a recent Sports Illustrated article by Albert Breer, the Raiders have discussed getting into the top three and earning the Commanders’ pick.
“Will they succeed? It seems unlikely that the first three picks will be traded, and if that is the case, it will depend on how the team feels about McCarthy (and possibly a few others). From there, it will depend on whether the situation worsens to the point where the former Michigan quarterback is not selected at No. 13 (which is definitely conceivable). There is still much work ahead of us.
Breer states that although he doesn’t think the Commanders will exchange the selection, anything may happen in the days leading up to the draft.
The Reasons the Commanders Must Not Exchange the Pick
Getting a haul full of draft selections is always thrilling. The Washington Commanders must take a chance on their rookie quarterback, even if there’s never a guarantee they’ll be a star.
Their decision to select a quarterback in the draft was virtually confirmed on March 14 when they elected to trade Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks. Washington will be getting a new quarterback unless they intend to start Marcus Mariota, who they signed in free agency this offseason.
