MLB.com | Hoch, Bryan: Regarding prospects, Spencer Jones, the Judgian outfielder who is ranked either first or second in the organization depending on which list you consult, has drawn a lot of attention this spring. But the Yankees coaching staff has been taking notice of catcher Austin Wells.
Despite his struggles this spring, he was largely reliable at the plate during his minor league career, so there’s not a lot of concern that he won’t be able to put it all together. More crucially, though, Wells has played defensively so effectively that talks about switching him to left field or first base have been put on hold for the time being.
MLB.com | Dykstra, Sam, and others: The Yankees came in at No. 11, a full ten spots better than their mid-2023 rating, despite losing multiple prospects in trades for Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo and through the Rule 5 Draft. MLB.com has released its yearly ranking of the league’s farm system.
The Tampa Bay Rays are ranked sixth, while the Baltimore Orioles lead the rankings for the sixth consecutive season. Boston and Toronto are ranked 14 and 24, respectively, behind the Yankees. Regretfully, that only qualified them for third place in the American League East.
Sports on Yahoo! | SNY Newsdesk: Oswald Peraza, an infield prospect, had more testing done on his damaged shoulder Wednesday, including a dye contrast.
This is not good news for Peraza, who has been fighting for a position on the team as the Yankees search the market for experienced bench alternatives, even though it does not indicate that he is struggling with a major ailment.
Sports | Yahoo! | Phillip Martinez: Speaking of veteran bench options, on Thursday night there was a report that the Yankees tried to sign Amed Rosario following Kiké Hernandez’s re-up with the Los Angeles Dodgers, only to watch him turn down a $2.5 million offer to sign with the Tampa Bay Rays because of more playing time available. In the broad scheme of things, this move is insignificant, but it does illustrate the Yankees’ reluctance to use a bench that includes Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza.
