Following Tremaine Edmunds’ signing of a four-year, $72 million contract with the Chicago Bears, Brandon Beane was extremely careful in free agency the previous season. Buffalo would receive a compensatory selection if the team signed fewer free agents than they lost to other teams.
The Bills received a compensation selection on Friday in exchange for losing Edmunds, albeit it was probably not the pick they had anticipated. Upon quickly perusing the third round selections awarded to teams—what Buffalo had anticipated obtaining in exchange for Edmunds’ departure—the Bills were noticeably absent. Four clubs received compensatory picks in the third round: the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, and Jacksonville Jaguars.
In contrast, Buffalo received pick No. 133 in the fourth round as compensation for losing Edmunds.
Although Beane stated he was also predicting Buffalo to receive a third round selection for Edmunds, projections showed Buffalo obtaining a third round choice; but, the league’s formula did not favor the team. As of right now, the franchise is without a third-round choice in the NFL Draft for 2024.
