The Washington Commanders recently released him; they are rebuilding, and he will be 33 next season. The 49ers could presumably sign him to a one-year contract at around $4 million. And he would be worth it.

Free agency opens on March 13, and the 49ers need another tight end. They should sign Logan Thomas.

He isn’t the greatest tight end available, but the 49ers don’t need a starter. They’re looking for a No. 2 tight end who can play alongside and occasionally replace George Kittle. Thomas would be wonderful.

The Washington Commanders recently released him; they are rebuilding, and he will be 33 next season. The 49ers could presumably sign him to a one-year contract at around $4 million. And he would be worth it.

Last season, Thomas caught 55 passes and scored four touchdowns, while Kittle caught 65 passes and scored six. What a fantastic pairing they would make for a year. Remember that the 49ers signed former Washington tight end Jordan Reed as Kittle’s running mate a few years back, but Reed was unable to remain healthy. And the 49ers haven’t had a good No. 2 tight end since then. Thomas might change that.

The 49ers’ current backup tight ends are Charlie Woerner, who is a stiff, Ross Dwelley, who never plays, Cam Latu, who couldn’t even make the squad last year (he spent the season on injured reserve), and Brayden Willis, whose biggest (only?) play last season was a penalty in Super Bowl overtime.

Thomas would be a significant improvement over all of them.

Of course, the 49ers could draft a tight end, but they attempted it last year (Latu) and failed. It’s better to sign a recognized commodity, especially if he’s affordable.

What Brandon Staley will do for the 49ers

Brandon Staley was hired today by the 49ers, although he will not be the defensive coordinator or call defensive plays. So, what will he do?

Before we answer that question, it’s worth noting that the 49ers are probably not paying Staley well. Why should they? The Chargers must pay Staley an additional $4 million in 2024, essentially paying for him to work for the 49ers next season. How generous.

So, while the 49ers have not made a significant investment in Staley, he will continue to play an important role on the coaching staff.

Don’t anticipate Staley to be in meetings throughout the week or on the sidelines mingling with players on game days. That is what Nick Sorensen, the new defensive coordinator, will accomplish. Expect Staley to be in the coach’s booth on game days, where he can observe all 22 players and assist Sorensen in making adjustments.

Remember, Wilks wanted to be in the coach’s booth and call plays for the first half of the season. Then the 49ers made him call plays from the sideline. They will now have a coordinator both on the field and in the booth.

Staley will also assist Sorensen in developing game plans for teams with which he is unfamiliar, like as the Chiefs. That’s because Staley faced them twice a season for the last three years while coaching the Chargers. It’s difficult to envision Sorensen outcoaching Andy Reid in the Super Bowl if they meet again. Staley will provide the 49ers with assistance and an extra set of eyes for a low cost.
