Frankie Montas’ spring training stay with the 2024 Cincinnati Reds has already lasted more innings than his whole 2023 season with the New York Yankees.
That would be 1 1/3 innings in Kansas City during the season’s last series, as a reward for a rigorous rehab that went well. Montas earned one last chance to pitch for the Yankees, and it was his shoulder, not his resolve, that threw his season off track. Still, his future in pinstripes appeared gone long before his winter surgical announcement prior to the 2023 season, all the way back to June 2022, when the shoulder balked, and Brian Cashman pulled the trigger on a trade anyhow.
Montas, who was expected to return to the Bronx as rotation depth/a helpful teacher, instead inked a one-year, $16 million deal with Cincinnati, well above any number New York could match.
Instead of a pillow contract, he signed for a bed of cold hard cash. After the righty’s strong spring debut, it turns out that Yankees fans will need a good pillow to lay on, given how much tossing and turning they’ll be doing thinking about his two immaculate, whiff-filled innings.
Frankie Montas, a former Yankee right-hander, is the talk of the Reds camp! Eat my face with a knife and a spoon!
“I’ve quit the Yankees! I’m miraculously cured!”
Montas’ stuff looked clean in that early spring highlight clip, and he appears to have carried his commendable attitude into the Reds’ pursuit for the NL Central crown and beyond.
Catcher Luke Maile identified Montas as the early standout in both field work and locker room interactions, and the right-hander has apparently “never been happier,” which I’m informed is possible with a quick infusion of $16 million cash.
We wish Montas nothing but success in the NL Central. It would have been good if he could have avoided brightly emphasizing his name on Cashman’s recent acquisition bust list while still in town.

Three overreactions to the first week of the Yankees’ offensively explosive spring training.
The New York Yankees’ spring training schedule has only just begun, and we don’t want to be too bold, but this “Juan Soto” appears to be a star player.
Aside from Soto and his dominant left-handed presence, the majority of the Yankees’ regular lineup has appeared Opening Day-ready to begin camp. Aaron Boone would most likely accept the “Bubble Wrap Until the Opener” option this week.
Are there any players that fans would like to see more from? Of course. Are there any pain locations that have lasted year after year? No doubt. Is it entertaining to watch both Oswald Peraza and Everson Pereira doink popups before of a pivotal year in the majors? We had no fun! Overall, however, the machine has run smoothly, and the most significant takeaway at the conclusion of each day is, “They were or were not healthy.”
That being said, certain people have already caught our attention, and their contributions have sparked some extreme reactions. Sorry. It’s more enjoyable to have fun.
Three overreactions to the Yankees’ great start in spring training
Clarke Schmidt could have been the most impressive Yankee starter.
Aaron Boone reiterated before to Schmidt’s spring debut on Tuesday that he has felt no need to directly address the internet’s rampant Blake Snell conjecture with the right-hander, stating that the team’s current No. 5 starter is “not human.” And you know what? Good. After all, if Snell signs, Nestor Cortes Jr. will replace Schmidt in the bullpen.
Half-joking.
Schmidt has always been a spring standout, almost grabbing a roster place in 2020 before camp was canceled due to the, oh, major pandemic. Schmidt’s outing on Tuesday against the Rays went well overall. He allowed a single run in two innings, which was set up by a deep fly ball that Pereira couldn’t find. The sharpness of the stuff, however, was even better; Schmidt was completely in command, dotting needle eyes and passing the eye test with both his fastball and tight breaking stuff.
Carlos Rodón has been the talk of camp, and while he faltered briefly in his second inning before Gerrit Cole reminded him to breathe, he escaped unscathed (at an elevated velocity, albeit not nearly the 97 MPH from his recent bullpen sessions). Cortes Jr.’s velocity was also slightly higher, and the seven hits he gave up were insignificant in comparison to his rubber arm rebounding back the following day. It’s early, and while pitchers are supposed to be ahead of the hitters they face, all of the Yankee starters have shown promise. Schmidt’s performances have been the most impressive.
Second place in that department? William Warren. Oh, you weren’t prepared for the heating, were you?!
Yankees 20th-round pick dominates with the ‘best stuff’ of Sunday’s spring training action
The Yankees may have done it again, with “again” referring to either printing another reliever or developing a great pitching prospect from an unknown Cal Poly alum.
Bryce Warrecker needs to hurry up since he has an Opening Day bullpen spot to compete for! Half-joking… but, like…?
After all, no pitcher in the MLB performed better on Sunday than Warrecker, according to the robots that analyze such things. The Yankees’ 6’8″, 225-pound 20th-round pick in 2023 has yet to pitch a professional inning at any minor-league level, but he showed off some amazing frisbees in Sunday’s action in Clearwater, FL.
Now that Drew Thorpe has been assigned to San Diego, Warrecker is unquestionably the Yankees’ finest Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) righty. On Sunday, he was the nastiest pitcher in baseball, starting up where Hayden Wesneski left off a few springs ago.
Bryce Warrecker, a relief prospect for the Yankees, has a nasty crap belt from spring training.
Don’t like computer printouts saying “Stuff Was Good”? Maybe you want to… view the stuff? We’ve got your back.
Pitching Ninja filmed Warrecker in action, accentuating his incredible sweeper — and it’s worth mentioning that this man competed in a spring training game before participating in a minor-league game.
Will Warren may officially be the next in line for the Yankees’ Sweeper Throne at the MLB level, but fans’ attention will undoubtedly be drawn to Warrecker’s growth, which began in earnest this offseason and only recently became public.
While the righty may not have name recognition just yet, he does have pedigree. He did not win the Cape Cod League Pitcher of the Year award with the Orleans Firebirds in the summer of 2022 by accident!
And by the way, who designed the Firebirds’ uniforms? That would be the one and only Marcus Stroman, who began Warrecker’s debut game on Sunday. Everything links.
