I’m seeing a man named Evan, and one of our favorite activities is inducing the ideal laughter. Evan’s ideal laughter, when something is really, very amusing, is high and staccato, with a hahaha…pause…hahaha machine gun-like cadence, finally pinched off with a honking sound. I enjoy making him laugh. My ideal laugh is a little different, beginning with a little sigh. Then, like a boulder dropped by Sisyphus, it rolls down into my belly, causing me to double over.

It’s a fantastic game that we like playing whenever possible. Who can cause the other person to laugh the most quickly? While lounging around last Sunday, I regretted the fact that I arrived to Ideal Laugh with no input from Ev.

With all due respect to the man I adore, he may face competition. Juan Soto got under that ball and still knocked it to the scoreboard. One of my favorite things about baseball is how it elicits laughter. When a player appears to miss a pitch and yet club a bomb, all you can do is shake your head and laugh.

The last 12 months or so have been particularly difficult for me in terms of baseball. The Yankees were terrible and uninteresting in 2023. The politics and coverage of the game were disgusting. The world is in a state…well, Jeff Rosenstock put it best. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, I am ridiculously excited for spring training.

Juan Soto is a f****** Yankee! The Yankees had the best hitter in the game, so they did whatever it needed to get the second, third, or fourth best batter. Yes, we are only promised one year with Soto, but what a year it could be! Soto and skipper Aaron Judge are projected to be worth 14 wins on their own, and you’d be forgiven for going over on that amount.

The kids are here! The key to long-term success is to strike a balance between current victories (having really good players on your squad) and future wins, or a strong farm system. The Yankees may not have the same ceiling as the Orioles, but the additions of Spencer Jones, Will Warren, and Chase Hampton in the near future, at a time when Jasson Domínguez is nearly forgotten, speaks well for spring.

I am not an idiot. Spring training does not mean much in the grand scheme of things. Greg Bird had one of the best camps I’ve ever seen, and now he’s a star in Australia, a long distance from the Major Leagues. The Cardinals and Angels were the top teams in the 2023 exhibition schedule, but their seasons were not particularly successful.

But I’m not concerned about any of that right now. I don’t really watch other sports—the Florida Gators football program is a little lost—so this first taste of baseball is fantastic. The outcomes of spring training do not predict the results of regular season baseball, but gosh, is it not entertaining in the meantime. On Opening Day, I will take things very seriously, and when I make my annual forecasts, I will rely on the wisdom of projections rather than the results of exhibition games.

Until then, spring training is a lot of fun, and I’ll let myself get caught up in it. It may be pointless, but it is currently providing that Ideal Laugh.
