Titans Allow NFL Deadline to Pass, Don’t Extend Contracts of 4 Pending Free Agents

Nashville, Tennessee The NFL has given Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon and the team until today to decide whether to extend the contracts of Sean Murphy-Bunting, Ryan Tannehill, Derrick Henry, and Azeez Al-Shaair.

Each player’s contract’s vacant year will now be advanced into 2024 as the contracts were not renewed and the franchise tag was not applied.
The NFL employs a tactic known as “void years” to divide the salary cap hits related to signing bonuses equally. Let’s say a player agrees to a three-year deal worth a signing bonus of $30 million. The cap hit would then be split into three equal portions of $10 million annually.

Void years are used to add dummy years to the end of the contract; this can be done for up to five seasons.
As to overthecap.com, Tannehill has $9.2 million in dead money. A player’s wage cap charge during a time when they are not on the club is known as dead money.

Tannehill most likely won’t rejoin the Titans. The amount Al-Shaair has is $2.5 million. With 164 tackles last season, including 84 solo, he was unstoppable.

The Titans may decide to hold onto him in the hopes of renegotiating with him when free agency starts in March, as he was a key member of the team’s defense.

Over the course of 14 games last season, Murphy-Bunting recorded 57 total tackles, eight passes defended (two of which were interceptions), and two forced fumbles. His salary is $1.6 million, and he might return to the Titans.
Henry will have the most intriguing case; his number is $4.7 million. The standout running back stated that he wants to look into his free agency alternatives.

Both Callahan and Carthon have stated that they are excited to see Henry return, and Henry has frequently stated that he wants to play out his career with the Titans.
