According to Andy Martino of SNY, the New York Mets and former New York Yankees slugger Luke Voit are in talks about a contract. Nothing is official as of this writing, but Martino says an agreed-upon contract would be a minor-league deal with a spring training invitation.
Mets: Luke Voit is a real power danger.
Yankees fans will undoubtedly remember Voit. There was a period when it appeared that Voit would be hitting baseballs alongside Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton for many years to come.
Following a disappointing start with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017, Voit was traded to the Yankees during the 2018 season. He showed flashes of promise after the deal.
Voit then hit 21 home runs in only 118 games in 2019. He established a regular role and topped the league with 22 long balls during the shorter 2020 season. Voit finished tenth in the MVP voting that season as well.
He was limited to 68 games in 2021, though. He spent the 2022 season with the San Diego Padres and the Washington Nationals. Voit finished the season with 22 home runs in 135 games, although he struggled throughout, with the exception of his power.
Voit appeared in 22 games with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023 before being released. The Mets signed him to a minor-league contract in June 2023, but he never participated in an MLB game for the team and was eventually released.
At 33 years old, Voit faced a lot of uncertainty in MLB free agency. Nonetheless, the Mets appear to be willing to give him another chance.
Again, no agreement has been reached as of the publication of this piece. It will be intriguing to see how Voit might fit into the Mets’ squad. Pete Alonso is obviously their first baseman, and New York signed Ji-Man Choi on Saturday.
New York made a number of depth moves during the summer. They are hopeful that some of the roster additions would be beneficial in the long run. Perhaps Voit can carve out a spot on the major league team as a designated hitter.
