The New York Yankees acquired left-hander Clayton Andrews from the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday in exchange for a 19-year-old pitcher who had just made his debut in the Dominican Summer League.

Andrews, 27, made his major league debut in 2023, pitching 0-1 in four relief appearances with a 27.00 ERA. He spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Nashville, going 6-0 with five saves and a 2.53 ERA.

The Brewers signed right-hander Joshua Quezada, who will make his professional debut in the Dominican Republic in 2023. Quezada finished 6-0 with a 3.69 ERA in 11 games (four starts).

To clear space on their 40-man roster, the Yankees placed RHP Scott Effross on the 60-day disabled list.

The Yankees are facing early injuries to two crucial veterans as spring training begins.

The Yankees’ spring training is started, and the first round of injury woes has already arrived.

Reliever Scott Effross will not pitch for the Yankees until this summer as he recovers from offseason back surgery, manager Aaron Boone announced at his first press conference of the spring on Wednesday in Tampa.

Effross’ back problem appeared last fall as a result of the right-hander’s Tommy John surgery rehabilitation. The 2022 trade deadline acquisition missed the whole 2023 season due to elbow surgery. He had a back operation in December.

Catcher Jose Trevino is also injured, having reported to camp with a calf strain sustained a couple weeks ago, according to Boone.

Trevino underwent season-ending wrist surgery last summer, following an injury sustained during spring training.

Boone expects Trevino to be ready for Opening Day. The catcher is already engaged in full catching drills and performing well; he will just be unavailable for the first couple weeks of Grapefruit League play.

Trevino is slated to begin the season on the active roster, splitting time behind the plate with youngster Austin Wells.

With Effross out until the summer, a slot in the Yankee bullpen is now open. Candidates include big-league veterans Ron Marinaccio, Cody Poteet, Cody Morris, and Nick Ramirez, as well as prospects Will Warren, Clayton Beeter, and Yoendrys Gómez.

Clayton Andrews, a left-hander, is also in the mix. On Wednesday, the Yankees acquired Andrews from the Brewers in exchange for 19-year-old right-hander Joshua Quezada. Andrews, 27, was added to the 40-man roster after Effross was placed on the 60-day disabled list.

Lou Trivino, a reliever, was also observed at Steinbrenner Field on Wednesday, but the veteran is not currently under contract. According to Boone, the Yankees are “considering certain things” with Trivino, who is also recovering from Tommy John surgery after missing the entire 2023 season. He was also acquired by the club at the 2022 trade deadline as part of the failed Frankie Montas deal with Oakland.

“We’ll let it play out,” Boone stated. “He’s going through some bodily issues. “We’ll see.”
