On Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced their decision on quarterback Mitch Trubisky. The latter will no longer be in black and gold.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Steelers and Trubisky have amicably agreed to part ways.
Trubisky, who signed with the Steelers in 2022, has been benched in both of his seasons in Pittsburgh. Trubisky, who signed a two-year contract deal following last year, appeared in five games but threw five interceptions to four touchdowns.
Mason Rudolph took over after Trubisky was benched during the Colts game this season, and he finished the season with great numbers and a playoff participation. With Trubisky not returning, the Steelers should save $2.9 million against their $7.6 million salary cost.
Head coach Mike Tomlin previously addressed introducing in greater quarterback competition, while owner and team president Art Rooney II stated that results must be produced in 2024.
Both Tomlin and Rooney II have mentioned that they hope to re-sign Rudolph in free agency, and that there may be more room for him and Kenny Pickett to grow together.
“He did show what we’re capable of on offense, and the personnel we have here right now,” Rooney II said in a press conference. “So that is encouraging. I’m not sure we’ve seen (Rudolph’s) ceiling yet. We chose him high for a reason; we thought he had a lot of talent, and I believe we saw that.”
Should Rudolph return, it could be a positive indication for the Steelers. Rudolph completed 74.3 percent of his attempts for 719 yards and three touchdowns without being intercepted, yielding a passer rating of 118 after taking over. In the Wild Card round of the playoffs against the Buffalo Bills, Rudolph completed 22 of 39 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns.

Steelers and QB Mitch Trubisky agree to part ways.
The Pittsburgh Steelers must decide who will start as quarterback in 2024, and Mitch Trubisky will not be the solution. On Tuesday, the Steelers and Trubisky reached an agreement to move. Trubisky had two years remaining on a three-year, $19.4 million contract he signed last May. The Steelers released Trubisky, punter Pressley Harvin III, and offensive lineman Chukwuma Okorafor.
Trubisky signed with the Steelers as a free agency in 2022, the same year Pittsburgh chose quarterback Kenny Pickett in the first round of the draft. Trubisky started the season as the starter quarterback, but Pickett quickly took his spot. While Pickett struggled with injury and regression in 2023, Trubisky had two starts before the Steelers went to Mason Rudolph, who led them to a wild-card spot.
Trubisky completed 64.1% of his throws for 1,884 yards, eight touchdowns, and ten interceptions in 12 games (seven starts). He scored four running touchdowns.
Trubisky has 12,536 passing yards, 72 touchdowns, and 48 interceptions in 69 games (57 starts) with the Bears (2017-20), Buffalo Bills (2021), and Steelers since joining the league as the Chicago Bears’ No. 2 overall draft pick in 2017. He has a 31-26 career record as a starter. Harvin, 25, was the Steelers’ punter for the past three seasons, with a net average of 39.4 yards per punt in 47 career games. Okorafor, 26, spent seven seasons with the Steelers, starting all but one of the 49 games he appeared in from 2020 to 2022, and started seven of 14 games last season.
