Grant Beerman from Lakota West High School in West Chester, Ohio, traveled to Bloomington towards the end of last month to have a closer look at the IU football program. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound linebacker discussed why the Hoosiers left such a lasting impression on him in an interview with Peegs.com
Beerman had never visited Indiana University before, but he was impressed by a number of things on his Junior Day tour.
“I had an amazing trip to Indiana,” he remarked. It was wonderful to see the stadium and the facilities as it was my first time visiting. The weight room exceeded my expectations in size and was excellent. With the new staff, it was obvious that things would be different at Indiana.
He remarked, “I had a great time with the coaches.” “I had a great chance to speak with Coach Haines and Coach Warren Messer, the quality control coach, about football. Their energy and coaching manner are quite enjoyable to me. I’m confident that Coach Haines can help me grow into a taller linebacker because he was once a tall linebacker. I was particularly grateful for the opportunity to speak with Coach (Curt) Cignetti in person. I think he’ll quickly have a significant impact at Indiana.
The gifted prospect claimed that the IU coaches stressed to him how important a recruit he is to them in the 2025 class.
Regarding the Hoosier message, Beerman stated, “The coaches made it clear they like my athleticism, speed, and ability to cover multiple positions.” They are aware that in addition to playing downhill and blitzing, I can go out in coverage. In this cycle, they gave me the impression that I was important.
Under Coach Cignetti and his staff, Beerman is optimistic about the future of Indiana football.
He declared, “I am thrilled about the new coaching staff, and I think Indiana has great potential within the Big Ten.” “Although I’m just getting to know the coaches, I’m excited about what I’ve learned so far and I’m looking forward to continuing to build the relationship.”
Beerman racked up 79 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one pass break-up in the previous fall. He is ranked as the 63rd top linebacker in the nation and the 23rd best prospect in Ohio by 247Sports.com.
Offers to the three-star prospect have come from the following schools: James Madison, Kent State, Marshall, Miami (OH), Ohio, Toledo, UMass; Indiana, Illinois, Michigan State, Minnesota, Purdue, Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Ball State, Central Michigan, Charlotte, Eastern Michigan.
When Xavier Johnson is questionable for Saturday’s match against Purdue, should Anthony Leal start?
Indiana is still looking for answers even though the Hoosiers overcome an 18-point second-half deficit while playing Ohio State away from home. Leal could be just what the Hoosiers (14-9, 6-6) need to put a positive spin on the rapidly approaching regular season finale.
Tuesday night in Columbus, Leal was a hero thanks to his game-winning three-pointer, free throws, and rebounding. Furthermore, Indiana used Leal as their main ball handler in the closing minutes, and their offense was quite effective.
Leal’s productivity and minutes have skyrocketed in the past two weeks. He had only played more than nine minutes in two games before two weeks ago. He is now vying for additional minutes while in the rotation.
The senior’s career-high 13 points last week helped the Hoosiers overcome Iowa, making headlines. After Leal took advantage of his opportunity, Mike Woodson referred to him as a “true pro” in his approach.
Following the Iowa game, Woodson said of Leal, “He’s been a true, true teammate.” And coaching guys like that is simple. Because you know what to expect based on how he performs in practice, it’s simple to toss them into the game with confidence.
CURRENT PERFORMANCE
Leal was Indiana’s first replacement versus Illinois. The senior’s enthusiasm and physicality demonstrated that he was deserving of playing time, even though he missed a few shooting opportunities.
A few days later, Leal scored 13 points in 22 minutes of action versus Iowa. Although he made three threes, his rebounding contributed to the Hoosiers’ victory.
Over the weekend, Leal had no impact against Penn State. Despite missing both of his three-point tries, the Bloomington native did not play aggressively during the game.
One may argue that Leal’s late three-pointer or free throws against Ohio State were less significant overall than his defense, rebounding, and ball handling. Leal pulled down two blocks, two rebounds, and two
