On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs will play on the greatest stage in the NFL against the San Francisco 49ers after their final complete practice.
In their 2020 Super Bowl rematch, the two teams will square off in Las Vegas, with each team hoping to take the party to the party capital of the US.
Both teams have had a demanding week of preparation, and after finishing their last practice before the big game, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and company will be hoping they have done everything in their power to win the Lombardi Trophy this weekend.
The defending Super Bowl winners reportedly spent 66 minutes on Friday working on goal-line, short-yardage, and red-zone plays.
On Saturday, the squad will play a practice match, snap a team photo, and drive back to the hotel from Allegiant Stadium in thirty minutes.
The squad does not intend to switch hotels on Saturday night, as some teams have done in an effort to remove any last-minute distractions, according to head coach Andy Reid.
Reid told NBC’s Peter King, “We’ve gotten everything done that we needed to get done.” They did a fantastic job. They’ve been given attention. Every day, I get to witness it. Whether things are going well or not, that is sort of how they are.
Pat [Mahomes], Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed are the first to go. The guys have performed admirably here, making the most of the coaching resources we’ve provided them.
Due to a pectoral injury, the Chiefs have ruled out All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney for Sunday’s Super Bowl over the Niners.
However, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and wide receiver Rashee Rice seem primed for action.
After getting stepped on toward the end of the workout the day before, Rice participated fully in practice on Friday. Edwards-Helaire, who had been suffering with a sickness earlier in the week, also participated fully in practice.
On the last injury report, only running back Jerick McKinnon—who is still on injured reserve following surgery in January for a core muscle ailment—was listed by the Chiefs as questionable. Although Reid earlier in the week called his prospects of playing in the Super Bowl “slim,” the Chiefs have until Saturday afternoon to add him to their active roster.
All week long, Chiefs coach Reid maintained that he wasn’t writing Thuney out, even after the completion of a 66-minute practice on Friday at the Raiders’ practice complex, an AFC West foe. But with Thuney having not practiced since before he was injured in Buffalo during the divisional round, it was looking more and more likely that Allegretti would start in Thuney’s place.
This is nothing new for the long-time backup. Due to injuries, Allegretti also started the Super Bowl in 2021 against Tampa Bay.
“A mindset of’man-up,'” stated Trey Smith, the right guard for the Chiefs. “Nick is the epitome of professionalism.” He is prepared to leave. He has performed admirably during the last few weeks of getting ready. Nick will perform admirably, and our coaches will have us ready.
Near the conclusion of Thursday’s practice, Rice was unintentionally stepped on and had to shuffle off the field, giving the Chiefs a scare. In three postseason games, the rookie wide receiver has emerged as one of Patrick Mahomes’ go-to targets, hauling in 20 catches for 223 yards and a touchdown while deflecting some of the spotlight from tight end Travis Kelce.
Edwards-Helaire declared himself healthy after suffering a high ankle sprain, yet he was not there at the Super Bowl the previous year.
“This is the goal you have always worked toward since you were a young child,” stated Edwards-Helaire, a former first-round selection who was fired by Isiah Pacheco the previous season and who will be available for free after this one. Even if getting there is never easy, we were able to accomplish the tasks required to return.
As they prepare to exact retribution on the Chiefs on Sunday, the 49ers also completed their final practice.
According to reports, Brock Purdy and company conducted a 68-minute jog-through on Friday that focused on red-zone work.
With no players on the active roster carrying an injury designation, the 49ers are healthy going into the contest.
The 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan stated, “Guys have worked hard these past two weeks.” “The injured players have made every effort to recover in time for the match.” We’ve never had everyone full and well before. That’s the proper method to have it in the game.
With an ankle issue, backup defensive end Kalia Davis was listed as questionable for San Francisco despite practicing this week and being placed on injured reserve. It is not anticipated that Davis will be activated to participate in the game on Saturday.
Before the big game, Taylor Swift, the girlfriend of Chiefs player Kelce, will be going through her own final practice.
