Alex Anzalone shares what Dan Campbell taught him about watching the Super Bowl.
In a heartbreaking post for The Players’ Tribune, Detroit Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone delves into the aftermath of the NFC Championship Game, giving thoughts on the team’s unity behind head coach Dan Campbell’s courageous fourth-down plays, as well as the emotional resolve required to face defeat. More poignantly, Anzalone recalls Campbell’s advice from his leaving interview: watch the Super Bowl not as a passive observer, but as a trigger for drive.

Dan Campbell instructs Alex Anzalone to watch the Super Bowl.
Anzalone stated that Campbell explained to him why he should watch the Super Bowl.

“It’s funny…” When we had our leave meetings with Dan the other day, he asked the same question. I did not know how to respond. I hadn’t even considered it before, and the idea of going to a Super Bowl party and standing around like an idiot, pretending to be happy made me sick.”

“But Dan answered, “No, you have to watch it, man.” Use every second as incentive. “I’ll definitely be watching.”

“I can’t help but have this image of Dan sitting in a dark room this Sunday, all by himself, gripping his coffee cup for three hours straight, staring daggers at the TV, just counting down the milliseconds until training camp starts and we can run it back.”

The Bottom Line: A Blueprint for Resilience
The conversation between Dan Campbell and Alex Anzalone encapsulates a key reality about high-performance sports: the route is filled with disappointments, but the determination to study, learn, and be driven by the scenes of squandered opportunities is what shapes champions. Campbell’s envisioned solitude, his constant focus locked on the game, represents not just personal dedication, but also a leadership style fully committed to his team’s progress and resilience.

As the Lions turn to the future, this moment of contemplation is destined to become a pillar of their collective psyche—proof that even in failure, there remains a powerful germ of triumph. With eyes on the prize and hearts bent on redemption, Detroit’s message is clear: they are not simply watching the game; they are preparing for a comeback.
