Former Steelers RB Anthony McFarland Signs With UFL Team

Anthony McFarland, a former running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has found a new professional home. It’s not in the NFL, though. Rather, McFarland has committed to the San Antonio Brahmas of the UFL. McFarland was one of seven players added to the league’s rosters, according to a news statement the organization released on Tuesday.

Ex-Steelers punter Brad Wing also signed with the Brahmas. The Steelers’ starting punter in 2014, he was brought back to punt in two games in 2023, averaging 45 yards on 11 attempts. Pittsburgh re-signed Wing to the practice squad ahead of their playoff game but did not elevate him.

The team selected McFarland in the fourth round of the 2020 draft, but he was never successful in Pittsburgh. Despite having 4.4 speed, he was too small, too weak, and too unreliable to have much of an impact. His knee issues were exacerbated by injuries as well. McFarland damaged his knee and was placed on injured reserve after participating in the 2023 season opener. Even though he came back in the middle of the season, RB Godwin Igwebuike, who had a more comprehensive special teams skill set, outperformed him in terms of gameday attire.

Anthony McFarland carried the ball 42 times in his four years with the Steelers, 33 of which were as a rookie. As a receiver, he only had 11 receptions for 3.5 yards per attempt on average. His best game occurred in a 2022 triumph against the Indianapolis Colts. Together with Benny Snell, McFarland helped the Steelers win by carrying the ball six times for thirty yards and adding two receptions for eleven yards when Jaylen Warren and Najee Harris were sidelined.

Despite having a successful training camp in 2023, McFarland’s injury and lack of special teams value limited his playing time. Although he was somewhat successful when employed on kick returns, it wasn’t enough to outfit him for gamedays. He was dismissed by Pittsburgh at the end of the season, and on Christmas, he signed again to the practice squad. A week following the Steelers’ Wild Card loss to the Buffalo Bills, his contract expired.

In an effort to get into an NFL camp this summer, McFarland will try to put on strong footage this spring. The USFL and XFL will combine to become the UFL, which will begin play on March 30. On March 31, San Antonio will play its first game of the season against the D.C. Defenders.
