Soon-to-be free agents in Super Bowl LVIII who could be in line for big paydays

Super Bowl LVIII between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs will take place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday night, and there will be no shortage of celebrity power on the field.

It might also be the final time some of those stars, who are pending free agents, suit up in the crimson and yellow of the Chiefs or the scarlet and gold of the 49ers. The top five Super Bowl players who will shortly be free agents and have the opportunity to sign lucrative contracts this offseason are as follows:

1. Kansas City Chiefs DT Chris Jones

Jones signed a one-year contract before the season began, so while he received the money he was hoping for ($19.5 million with incentives up to $25 million), the term was not what he got. With 13 tackles for loss, the 29-year-old defensive tackle led the Chiefs and tied for the team lead with 10.5 sacks. According to PFF, he led all DTs in the NFL in QB hits (18), was second in pressures (75), and finished sixth in hurries (43) and pass-rush win percentage (18.9%).

Jones’ 2023 performance was on par with that of Aaron Donald, Quinnen Williams, and Dexter Lawrence, among other elite performers at his position, and he will probably be compensated accordingly. According to Spotrac, Jones is projected to sign a three-year contract worth $85.45 million this summer, making him worth roughly $28.4 million.

2. The San Francisco 49ers’ DE Chase Young

Young, who had missed two seasons due to injury, had the kind of season that would have made him a strong candidate for a long-term free agency contract. According to Pro Football Focus, Young, who split the season between the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Commanders, recorded a career-high 66 pressures, 48 hurries, and eight quarterback hits in addition to 7.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss.

The 24-year-old former No. 2 overall selection may rank as the second defensive end in the 2024 free agent class, after Carolina’s Brian Burns, if he can have a strong performance against Patrick Mahomes on Sunday. According to Spotrac, he will sign a one-year, $13 million free-agent contract. However, considering his outstanding rookie campaign and his accomplishments in 2023, his next contract may resemble Cameron Heyward’s four-year, $65.5 million agreement with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021.

3. Kansas City Chiefs CB L’Jarius Sneed

One of the more underappreciated players at his potion is Sneed. Sneed had the third-highest number of forced incompletions (17) among cornerbacks who have played 500 or more coverage snaps this season, but he also gave up the fourth-lowest quarterback rating against (55.9), sixth-lowest completion % (51.9), and seventh-lowest yards per reception (9.7). Only four CBs (minimum 500 coverage snaps) did not allow a touchdown throughout the regular season, including him.

Even while he may not be as well-known as players like Xavien Howard, Trevon Diggs, or Jalen Ramsey, his play is still on par with the greatest. Sneed is undoubtedly due for a significant raise from his $982,330 pay this season, and according to Spotrac, he will get a four-year, $65.32M contract in free agency, which translates to an annual salary of $16.3M.

4. The Kansas City Chiefs’ Mike Danna, a DE

At his position, Danna is likewise an underappreciated talent, albeit not nearly to Sneed’s level. As a member of the second-ranked Chiefs defense, which also finished the regular season with the second-most sacks, the 26-year-old DE achieved new career highs this season with 41 pressures, 28 hurries, seven tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks.

The top three edge rushers in the 2019 free agent class are probably Leonard Williams, Burns, and Young, but Danna isn’t far behind them. According to Spotrac, he is expected to sign a three-year contract worth $25.99 million ($8.6 million annually), placing him among the top 12 DEs in the league in terms of compensation.

5. The San Francisco 49ers’ Tashaun Gipson, S

Despite being the oldest player (33 years old) and the least well-known on this list, Gipson has had an incredible season. Leading the 49ers in coverage snaps (667), he also gave up the lowest completion percentage (44), and the lowest passer rating against (38.9) of any player on the squad.

Budda Baker, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Antoine Winfield Jr., Kyle Dugger, Geno Stone, Jeremy Chinn, and other quality safety players are all in the 2024 free-agent class; nevertheless, Gipson may still be able to sign a good contract with a team that needs to improve in the secondary. Although Spotrac does not have a contract prediction or a predicted market value for him, the three-year, $22.5 million contract he signed with the Houston Texans in 2019 might be similar to what he signs next.
