Next Sunday will see the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers play in Super Bowl LVIII. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter tricked his social media followers into thinking it was a completely different matchup on Sunday for a brief period of time.

It is inevitable for someone with Schefter’s level of social media activity to occasionally make blunders that go unnoticed.

When Schefter was tweeting on Sunday about how both teams had landed in Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII, that was the situation. The only issue is that he originally tweeted that the Washington Commanders and the Kansas City Chiefs would be playing each other in the big game.

Schefter tweeted, “Chiefs and Commanders have both arrived in Las Vegas.” “Super Bowl LVIII week has officially begun.”

To Schefter’s credit, he caught the error quickly and corrected the tweet a mere minute after it was posted, accurately identifying the 49ers as the NFC representative in the Super Bowl rather than the Commanders.

This error raises doubts, even from the usually level-headed insider. How on earth could Schefter confuse two teams that are located on diametrically opposed sides of the nation?

Prior to the tweet, Schefter had been covering the Commanders extensively. Specifically, he had covered the team’s hiring of Kliff Kingsbury as their new offensive coordinator and the first time head coach Dan Quinn met new general manager Adam Peters as the team’s coach.

This ceremonial trip to the Super Bowl is the best Commanders supporters have had since they took home the championship following the 1991 campaign.

For the benefit of the Commanders and their supporters, let’s hope that Dan Quinn and crew can assist Washington get back on track and get Schefter to tweet about the Commanders’ appearance at Super Bowl LIX the following season.
