Raiders’ looming Luke Getsy move after stunning Kliff Kingsbury reversal brings Justin Fields intrigue
The Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly planning to employ Luke Getsy, the former offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears who was sacked by the organization last month, after Kliff Kingsbury withdrew from consideration for the role.
Getsy, 39, was one of five well-known applicants vying for head coach Antonio Pierce’s position with the Raiders after Pierce had the interim tag off after the regular season.
Josh McDaniels was fired in mid-season, and Pierce took over for him.
Other coaches that were considered for the Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator position included Chip Kelly of UCLA, Mike Sullivan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Alex Van Pelt of the New England Patriots, and Kingsbury of the Washington Commanders.
Getsy oversaw an offensive that led the NFL in running in 2022 (177.3 yards per game) and finished second (141.1) while he was with the Bears and quarterback Justin Fields.
However, Chicago also had trouble with the passing game; two years ago, they finished dead last in passing offense with 177.3 yards per game, and last season, they were 27th (182.1).
After Bears management decided to retain head coach Matt Eberflus while cutting a large portion of their offensive staff, Getsy was let go.
In 2023, Jimmy Garappolo (six starts), Aidan O’Connell (10 starts), and Brian Hoyer (one start) were the Raiders’ starting lineup.
There is a rumored chance the Raiders could trade for Fields because they are looking for a new quarterback.
Fields said “coaching” was the cause of his “robotic” play during a dismal Bears season.
Furthermore, according to Eberflus, “the offense’s growth and development needed to be better than it was.”
In the NFL Draft of 2024, the Bears will select first overall.
