Flyers Should Claim Avalanche’s Ivan Prosvetov Off Waiver
Goalie Ivan Prosvetov was placed on waivers by the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday afternoon. The Philadelphia Flyers now require backup goaltender behind Sam Ersson due to the injury of Carter Hart, thus Prosvetov might be worth a look.
Despite being forced into a full-time starting duty, 24-year-old Ersson has lost all four of his starts and let up four goals in three of the contests. Since Hart began his leave of absence on January 23, the Flyers had a 0-3-0 record.
Prosvetov has been placed on waivers primarily because of his poor performance for the Avalanche. The Russian has a record of 4-3-1 with a 3.16 GAA and a.895 save percentage in 11 games this season. Not to mention, Alexandar Georgiev, who is playing for Team MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche in the 2024 NHL All-Star Game, has a 2.91 GAA and a.899 save percentage on the season.Furthermore, Prosvetov will turn 25 in early March, yet he is still only 24 years old. The former Arizona Coyotes goalie, who is 6-foot-5, is significantly larger than Ersson (6-foot-3) and Cal Petersen (6-foot-1).
I spoke with Evan Rawal of Colorado Hockey Now, and he provided us with intimate information about Prosvetov.First of all, he’s a lovely man. Among the most charming goalies I’ve ever met, I think. He possesses every quality you could ask for in a goalie on the ice. He hogs a lot of the net because he is large and has excellent movement. He moves a bit too much, which is the issue. If there is a bit too much pointless movement, some gaps are created. He played well at first, but his most recent game was a complete bust, and I believe the staff never really trusted him in the first place. Although he’s still young and has a lot of tools, I wouldn’t say he’s currently a lock to start in the NHL.Naturally, the Flyers’ first task will be to pray that Prosvetov ends up on waivers and that another team doesn’t claim him before them. From there, the 24-year-old might prove to be a valuable project for a team in dire need of a goaltender with NHL experience who could occasionally start games well.
Should Hart not stay with the Flyers past this season, Prosvetov might wind up being around longer given his age and great upside.
