Two weeks ago, quarterback Brock Purdy of the 49ers made an on-the-record statement in an ESPN.com piece stating that head coach Kyle Shanahan informed him during the offseason that the team intended to hire Tom Brady as the starting quarterback in 2023. Purdy and Shanahan had given several press conferences, but no one had inquired about Purdy’s remarks since.
Someone was finally questioned about it. Brady was that individual.
Pat McAfee questioned Brady about the Purdy report about the 49ers seeking Brady during a Tuesday media tour announcing the merger of TB12 with Nobull.
Brady didn’t specifically confirm that the 49ers wanted to sign him.
“In this last season, there’s a lot of different things that people would suggest, but I kind of just kept my mind focused on where I wanted to go,” Brady told 49ersWebZone.com. “Again, this was a great year for me to sit back and watch and learn and get prepared for being in the Fox booth next year.”
Brady left a lot of options open last year regarding a possible comeback to the NFL in 2023, as Chris Simms stated on PFT Live. In the end, he chose not to participate.
After 20 years with the Patriots, Brady became a free agent and chose the 49ers as his first option three years prior. The 49ers responded at that point with, “No thanks.”
