The Philadelphia Eagles are adding another new face to Nick Sirianni’s coaching staff, following the hiring of two new coordinators. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Eagles are signing Clint Hurtt, the former Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator, as their next defensive line coach. The Eagles are also expected to employ Seahawks assistant Karl Scott as their next defensive backs coach.

“The Eagles are expected to hire former Seahawks defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt as their D-line coach, per sources,” Pelissero said in a statement. “Sweeping staff changes continue under Nick Sirianni, who also is expected to hire one of Hurtt’s assistants in Seattle, Karl Scott, to coach DBs.” Hurtt, 45, made his NFL debut in 2014 as a defensive line coach for the Chicago Bears. After leaving the Windy City in 2016, he joined Pete Carroll in Seattle as an assistant head coach and defensive line coach in 2017, before becoming defensive coordinator in 2022.

Despite Seattle’s excellent defense, the Seahawks missed the playoffs this season, surrendering the third-most yards per game (371.4), second-most running yards (138.4), and eighth-most points (23.6).

The Eagles are bolstering their coaching staff, figuratively and physically.

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed Vic Fangio as their new defensive coordinator, and they are also looking for new defensive assistants.

According to NFL source Tom Pelissero, the Eagles want to hire former Seattle Seahawks defensive line coach Clint Hurtt to join Nick Sirianni’s staff.

They are also expected to sign Karl Scott, a former Seahawks senior defensive coach and defensive passing game coordinator. Pelissero claims Scott will coach Eagles defensive backs, while Aaron Wilson says Scott would have a “senior defensive role.”

Let’s take a closer look at each of the new appointments.

Clint Hurtt
Hurtt, 45, played defensive line in college, if you couldn’t tell from the photo above this post. An injury ended his playing career, prompting him to become a coach. Here’s an overview of his experience:

2003–2004 — Miami graduate assistant
Served as a defensive line coach at FIU in 2005, Miami from 2006 to 2009, and Louisville from 2010 to 2013.
In 2014, I worked as an assistant defensive line coach for the Chicago Bears. From 2015 to 2016, I was the outside linebackers coach.
From 2017 to 2021, Hurtt was the associate head coach and defensive line coach for the Seattle Seahawks. From 2022 to 2023, he was the defensive coordinator. Hurtt previously worked alongside Fangio in Chicago for two seasons.

The 49ers’ quest for another last-second miracle merits a thorough rewind.

Seahawks supporters aren’t sad to see Hurtt leave as Seattle’s defensive coordinator. It’s possible that he has more to contribute as DL coach. Hurtt has coached notable players such as Leonard Floyd (seven sacks in 12 games as a rookie), Michael Bennett, Frank Clark, and Jarran Reed.

Tracy Rocker, who joined Sirianni’s staff in 2021, will not be returning now that Hurtt has been hired as the Eagles’ defensive line coach. Philadelphia’s defensive line began the 2023 season well before weakening in the second half. It’s unclear who was responsible for the reduced DL rotation, but the Eagles need to get back to keeping their d-linemen fresh.

Karl Scott
Scott, 38, started his coaching career 17 years ago. Here’s an overview of his experience:

2007 — Delta State Graduate Assistant
2008-2011: Tusculum College defensive backs coach
2012–2013 — Southeastern Louisiana linebacker coach
2014 — Southeastern Louisiana’s defensive coordinator
Coached defensive backs at Louisiana Tech in 2015, Texas Tech in 2016-2017, and Alabama from 2018 to 2020.
In 2021, he will be the defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings. From 2022 to 2023, he will be the senior defensive assistant and passing game coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks

Wilson’s tweet regarding Scott included the phrase “has sent four defensive backs to the Pro Bowl in the past two years.” The athletes mentioned are Tariq Woolen (a rookie), Devon Witherspoon (a rookie), Quandre Diggs, and Julian Love.

Scott also spent a season working with Harrison Smith and Patrick Peterson in Minnesota.

We’ll see exactly what Scott’s function is. D.K. McDonald ended the 2023 season as the Eagles’ defensive backs coach. He was promoted last year to replace Dennard Wilson, who was abruptly fired by Sirianni.
